Just Bring It Back by Michael Dalton Johnson
My
uncle sold his old Chevrolet to a young man. Although the bill of sale
had "vehicle sold as is" in capital letters, my uncle got a call from
the young man complaining about a problem with the car.
I was surprised by how my uncle handled the complaint. Instead of saying, "I told you the vehicle was sold as is," he said, "Just bring it back, and I'll give you your money back."
The young man continued to describe the problem, and my uncle told him again, "Just bring it back. I'll be happy to give you your money back," and added, "Other than that, there's nothing I can do for you."
My uncle was a keen student of human nature and knew that the best way to handle the complaint was to offer a full refund.
When you look at the underlying psychology behind this, you'll see that my uncle established the value of his selling price by not hesitating to offer to take the car back. The move left the buyer with no place to go. He was either in or out. He was in. He said he wanted to keep the car, and my uncle never heard from him again.

Gold Class Prices by Kirsty Dunphey
I excitedly hopped on to Village Cinema's website recently to purchase
Gold Class tickets for my husband and I to go and see a movie. Being the
parent of a tiny person I've seen very few movies in the 20 odd months
since she was born and the excitement rushing through me at being able
to have 3 hours to chill out with my husband was pretty darn huge.
As I stepped through the website choosing my cinema, movie and time I
was pretty stunned to find out that if I wanted to book these tickets
online I would also have to pay an extra $5 per ticket for the privilege
of booking online. Now this confuses me. To book online, I'd still be
paying with credit card, as I would if I walked into the cinema, no
extra charge to them there. They're saving the cost of having a staff
member process my payment, less cost to them there. They're getting my
money up front and in advance meaning they know which sessions are
booked out / empty earlier, great for planning and if I don't show up
for some parental emergency they're also keeping my money which I never
would have paid if I'd waited until I walked in to purchase my ticket.
In short, it's going to cost them less and be more beneficial for them - and yet they're putting a barrier up to me doing it.
Online shopping is favourable to so many these days because it's
(usually) easier, because it's (often) cheaper and because it's
(frequently more) convenient and yet, online shopping at Village Cinemas
is not that much easier - there's usually not a line at Gold Class,
it's not cheaper and given the first two items it's not more convenient.
I think they might be missing the point. In a day and age where more
and more people download to watch and half my local video stores have
closed down and the others are massively downsizing I would have thought
a cinema would be doing everything they could to provide me with a
seamless online experience to encourage me to make the move to sit in a
plush theatre and experience a real movie experience.
What do customers see when they experience your business online? Can
they easily contact you (one click). Can they see your physical presence
opening hours? Can they read your website well on their mobile phone?
Do you have any unnecessary barriers to working with you online?

Measuring the ROI of Social Media? There’s a Laugh, and a Joke.
I got an (unsolicited) email offering a webinar to teach me about how to measure, and the importance of measuring, the ROI of social media.
TOTAL JOKE. And a bad one at that.
Social media, business social media, is running wild – with or without you. Your customers and prospective customers are posting on Facebook whether you have the balls to have presence there or not.
And I am not just talking to companies – I am talking to YOU – the individual.
CONSIDER THIS: Of all the grassroots revolutions that have occurred on social media, none of them were started by companies or a governments. They were all started by people – people who were excited, people who were afraid, people who were pissed, and people who wanted change and spoke up. They spoke over CEOs, media, newspapers, government, lobbyists, and politicians.
HERE’S WHAT THEY SHOULD MEASURE: LRI otherwise known as Lost Revenue (and goodwill and customer loyalty) of Idiots.
While Macy’s and most other department stores are/were measuring ROI, Zappos is cleaning their clock, delivering value, connecting with and responding to customers one on one, and building a billion dollar empire in less time than it took Macy’s to expand to a second store 100 years ago.
Webinars on the subject of ROI of social media are likely run by the same people who thought Amazon.com wouldn’t make it. If Bezos measured the ROI at Amazon in the first five years, he would have quit. He accomplished domination while Barnes & Noble was measuring ROI, and Borders was going broke.
Amazon now has total market dominance based on leadership, vision, and technological excellence. Same with Apple. Microsoft used to laugh at them, now their employees all have iPads and iPods at home.
Measure? No, INVEST RESOURCES IN SOCIAL MEDIA WITHOUT MEASURING. NOW!
It’s way too soon to measure.
MAJOR POINT OF UNDERSTANDING: If they had measured the ROI of TV, or the computer, or the automobile, or the telephone, or the Internet after 5 years, NOBODY would have gotten involved, and we’d be in a technological bog – sinking.
Wake up and smell the opportunity!
People guarding nickels have no idea of the power or the value of business social media, much less social media. They have no idea of the lost opportunity, or the lost revenue. They have no idea of the perception and participation of customers.
My bet is people who measure the ROI of social media HAVE NEVER TWEETED. Wanna take that bet?
I define these people as the ones who still have a small rubber circle in the middle of their keyboard – completely out of touch with what’s new, and trying to prevent the unstoppable force of progress, and customers.
Wanna know who else “measured” financial return?
Blockbuster measured online movie services.
Blackberry measured smartphones.
Microsoft measured music players.
Billion-dollar MIS-MEASUREMENT: Bank of America DIDN’T measure or understand the power of Facebook. They were greedily measuring increased revenue from debit card customers. Their billion dollar loss paled in comparison to their complete loss of goodwill. I doubt they will recover in a decade.
All of those companies are/were foolish.
There’s one company you want to take their time, measure nickels, rely on lawyers, and stick their big toe in the water before getting involved – that one company is your biggest competitor.
Here’s an easy plan to get rolling in a week or two:
1. Gather the email addresses of EVERYONE in your world.
2. Create a first-class, well tagged with key words, business page on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter.
3. Start a YouTube channel by inviting your customers to film WHY they bought from you.
4. Map out a strategy, and goals for engagement, for Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and YouTube.
5. Assign someone to monitor, post, and RESPOND to all who engage.
6. Create six value-based messages, two each for Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter.
7. Shoot 2-3 value-based (something your customers could use) videos and post them on YouTube.
8. Invite all of your customers to join you by sending examples of your value messages. I recommend one campaign per media for four weeks – but have links to all in each email.
9. Post something every day on Facebook. Tweet something every day. Link with 2-5 people every day. Post one video a week.
10. If you really want to create some buzz, convert your contacts to Ace of Sales (www.aceofsales.com) – and send emails that differentiate yourself from the competition.
10.5 Only listen to your lawyer if they tell you what you CAN do.
Start there.
Start now.
Start.

Yippie Yogurt Is A Dream Come True. The Doors Are Open! Yippie!
Alicia Rainey chops strawberries during her first day at the newly
opened Yippie Yogurt on Friday along West Texas Street and Beck Avenue
in Fairfield. Yippie Yogurt is a part of the Yippie Foundation, which is
a non-profit helping underprivileged youth gain career skills and job
experience in the community. (Conner Jay/Daily Republic)

Rainey was interested in becoming a youth mentor, but after she graduated from high school, she needed guidance.
So Rainey applied to the Yippie Yogurt program, to get the mentorship she needed to boost her career opportunities.
Rainey displayed the skills she learned through program training Friday afternoon during Yippie Yogurt’s first day open to the public.
The Yippie Foundation is nonprofit that provides Solano County homeless, foster care and low-income youths with job readiness, vocational mentoring and life skills through its training and internship programs. It is an acronym for Youth Initiating Professional Preparedness In Employment.
Youths 16 to 24 get credit for about 20 to 30 hours of job readiness education after graduating from a six-month paid internship at the Yippie Yogurt shop.
Sherilyn Henry, president of the Yippie Foundation, said the shop is a great opportunity for low-income youths to both enhance their resume and receive valuable guidance from professionals through the vocational mentoring program.
Rainey is one of the graduates of the program and one of the first employees to open up shop.
Standing at the register with a smile on her face, Rainey said she felt ready and prepared to handle the task of running the store, at least for her shift.
“So far so good,” she said.
Rainey said she hopes that once she graduates from college, she can come back to Yippie Yogurt and become a vocational mentor herself. She credits Henry and the foundation for the encouragement to reach her goal.
“Sherilyn has been a big inspiration, starting this, mentoring youth,” Rainey said.
Yippie Yogurt is located at 1955 W. Texas St., No. 40, in the Winery Square shopping center. For more information about the foundation, visit www.yippiefoundation.com
